2024 healthcare staffing report

For many, a role in healthcare isn’t just a profession; it’s a calling. A deep sense of purpose drives nurses, medical assistants and other healthcare workers (HCWs) to care for others. But despite their strong dedication to the job, many feel overwhelmed and under-appreciated.

Our recent survey of over 300 HCWs paints a concerning picture:

  • 46% said they are somewhat or very likely to leave their current job in the next 12 months. Pay—or lack thereof—is a major factor. Seventy-two percent believe they are underpaid for the work they perform.
  • The feeling of being undervalued is especially significant for the majority (66%) of HCWs who find themselves living paycheck to paycheck.
  • The timing of their pay is a point of concern, with 80% wanting faster pay and 68% saying they would choose one role over another if they got paid 24 hours after a shift.
  • Nearly half (47%) said they considered leaving their current position in favor of on-demand or per-diem work, presenting an opportunity for innovative healthcare staffing companies to grow their talent pool.

This study explores exactly what HCWs want and how staffing leaders can use this knowledge to retain their top talent. We’ll delve into the most common reasons for seeking on-demand work, as well as strategies for creating a workplace that prioritizes the needs and desires of committed caregivers.
